I am a dedicated educator turned administrator who believes that learning is intellectual, social, and physical. Each part of a student’s mental, emotional, and intellectual experiences and resources are brought to bear on their learning. In order for our students to bravely bring all of who they are to their educational journey, I am dedicated to diversity, equity, and embracing contingency. I am passionate about student life and faculty development and creating capacity across grades and disciplines.

EMPLOYMENT

2023 – present

Principal/Head, The British School Bern, Rüfenacht, SwitzerlandResponsible for growing enrollment, networking with area schools, developing a business plan, marketing the school, expanding school offerings, ensuring professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and creating partnerships at the Cantonal level. Day-to-day activities include communicating the school’s mission of tailored learning via social media, newsletters, and email outreach. I am a consultant for the school’s website, and I ensure that all communication regarding learning is in line with the British School curriculum.

2020-2023

Tenured Professor and Department Head, Communication Studies, Big Bend Community College, Moses Lake, WA

Duties:Teaching, course and curriculum development, creation of learning content targeted to specific learning areas and levels of understanding, and incorporating feedback to produce educational materials that are responsive and engaging. Student centered teaching for ages 15-30. Created content for the department’s webpage and participated in campus wide outreach for the Commitee for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity, and acted as its co-chair.

2017 – 2020           

Lecturer, Communication Studies, University of California, San Diego

Duties: Ongoing lecture appointments in the Communication Department at UCSD teaching large introductory courses such as Social Formations, Communication, Culture and Representation, and have also taught a number of upper level courses such as Communication and Community, and Problem with Voice.

Lecturer, Urban Studies, University of California, San Diego

Duties: Taught an introductory course on the development of cities, the effect of urban living on human social life and on the growth and development of sociological research and its contributions to understanding modernity, and social life and the city. Responsible for managing 3 teaching assistants and developing a syllabus that cohered with the department’s goals for the class, which specifically included the dimension of drawing new students into the field of Urban Studies.

Lecturer, Communication Studies, California State University, SanMarcos

Duties: Taught a public speaking class and responsible for grading, lecture delivery, maintaining a dense speaking schedule, and adhering to the university’s specifically developed standards for their public speaking curriculum.

2010 – present           

Adjunct Faculty, Communication Studies, Miramar College

Duties: Teach a wide array of communication classes offered here, develop syllabi that cohere with state standards for learning outcomes, participate in community service, and work with other faculty to develop department goals and standards.

2007 – 2008

Duties: Taught the introductory course on communication, managed all student records, and participated in departmental meetings.

2003 – 2006

Taught the “lab” portion of public speaking classes where students learned the skills required to make speeches. These were hands on teaching sections and workshops.

2001 – 2006               

Educational Outreach, American Red Cross, Sacramento – Sierra Chapter

Responsible for delivering educational material on disaster preparedness, CPR training, First Aid training and AIDS awareness to area schools and associations. Delivered presentations and conducted workshops in the greater Sacramento area and implemented a pilot science program in several elementary schools.
